First of all, fiber gives you a feeling of fullness, so you are apt to eat less. But it does much more. Foods high in fiber have fewer calories than those that are low in fiber. A slice of white bread, for example, contains 63 calories while a slice of whole-wheat bread contains 56. White rice has 92 calories per gram while brown rice has only 86. Although this may seem like only a small difference, in weight loss, numbers add up. If you eat bread and rice every day but eat the darker varieties that contain fewer calories, over a year, you would consume 4,700 fewer caloriesóthatís more than a pound fewer calories. Fiber may also help with weight loss because it ìpushesî calories out of the digestive tract before they are absorbed in the body. When eating a typical, modern, low-fiber diet, the average person absorbs some 93 percent of the calories in the foods they eat. By increasing the amount of fiber you eat, especially through fruits and vegetables, the rate by which calories are absorbed drops to some 91 percent. And, if you switch to whole-wheat bread and add other grain products, the rate drops to 88 percent. Again, a small number. But, consider this: For a woman eating 1,800 calories per day, a two percent reduction in calorie absorption (from 93 to 91 percent) translates into a loss of almost four pounds per year. A five percent reduction (from 93 to 88 percent) would be a loss of nine pounds per year! Fiber also contributes indirectly to weight loss. It helps clean the digestive tract and rid the body of toxins. This helps ìtuneî the body for the better foods and supplements you will use as part of the AIM SlimMetrix Weight-Loss Partnership. Fiber also plays an important role in blood sugar (glucose) levels. Fiber slows the digestive process and because of this, the carbohydrates we eat are converted less quickly to blood sugar. The thyroid and metabolismThe thyroid glandóa small butterfly-shaped gland located just below the Adamís appleóplays an important role in weight management. This centers on its role in metabolism. The thyroid gland releases hormones called triodothyronine and thyroxin. Thyroxin plays a vital role in regulating the bodyís overall metabolism. If the thyroid gland releases inadequate amounts of thyroxin, the basal metabolismóthe minimum amount of energy needed to breathe, digest food, and so onóslows. If this slowing is severe enough, it is known as hypothyroidism. A person with hypothyroidism burns fewer calories, which makes it difficult for them to expend more calories than they consume. This can make it extremely difficult to lose weight. The thyroid and hypothyroidism are often overlooked in weight-loss because the symptoms of a poorly functioning thyroid and lower basal metabolismóalways feeling cold, feeling rundown and weak, having dry skin, gaining weight, and experiencing depressionómimic other concerns, or are just chalked up to ìthe aging process.î As many as 5 to 13 million Americans may suffer with hypothyroidism, and the problem is more prevalent in women; up to 10 percent of women have it, and possibly one in five women has some degree of it. Therefore, for weight management to be successful, it is important to maintain a healthy thyroid. Testing your thyroidYour doctor can test you for an underachieving thyroid; however, you can also accurately test it yourself. This is done through the Barnes Basal Temperature test. In this test, you take your temperature immediately upon waking in the morning. Before getting out of bed, place a thermometer in your armpit for ten minutes. Perform the test two days in a row. Premenopausal women should take the test when not menstruating or on the second or third day of the menstrual cycle. If your temperature is 97.8-98.2 ƒF (36.5-36.7 ƒC), your thyroid function is probably normal. If it is below 97.8 ƒF (36.5 ƒC), there is a chance that you are hypothyroid, especially if you are experiencing any of the above-mentioned symptoms. Maintaining the thyroidDiet and supplements may help maintain thyroid health. In the case of hypothyroidism, getting adequate amounts of vitamin A is important. In Vitamins in Endocrine Metabolism, Isobel Jennings of University College, University of Cambridge, cites studies in which animals that did not receive enough vitamin A were limited in their ability to produce thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH). Without enough of this hormone, the thyroid gland cannot function as well as it should. A deficiency in vitamin A also means that the thyroid gland cannot absorb iodine properly, so the thyroid secretes too little thyroxin. The vitamins B2, B6, and B3 also affect the thyroid. A deficiency in B2 can reduce the amount of thyroxin the thyroid produces, a deficiency in B6 can reduce thyroid function by decreasing the conversion of iodine into thyroxin, and a deficiency in B3 can reduce the overall efficiency of the thyroid. Less ìmainstreamî care for the thyroid includes supplementing with the amino acid tyrosine, which is used by the thyroid to produce thyroxin, and using herbs. Although there has been little clinical research on herbs and the thyroid, herbs have a long history of use in supporting the metabolic rate, largely because of their nutritive capabilities and because they contain iodine. This supports an earlier report in the same magazine that noted that ìThese data suggest that supplementation with chromium picolinate can lead to significant improvements in body composition when a BCI [body composition index] is used as the outcome criterion that represents a sum of the net gains in nonfat mass added to the sum of the net losses of body fat.î (Current Therapeutic Research 57, no. 10 (October 1996): 747-765) You can see, then, that the AIM SlimMetrix booster is a valuable component of the AIM SlimMetrix Weight-Loss Partnership.
